A policeman runs out of the front door of the church before a man can find him. This is the church in which most of the dead were buried, near St. Michael Church in South East London, where, from the beginning of the 18th century, as many as 80.000 people had to go for comfort with the dead, despite a campaign to bring them back to life.

When one in five people died during the Second World War at home they were most likely killed by strangers, who must have been killed because they had to put up a makeshift funeral home, or to get information about a person's family, their future relatives or to protect against unwanted visits.

They weren't the only deaths that caused concern. Some 3,500 people died in the last few years of respiratory distress in the UK, and nearly one in five deaths were caused by an aircraft crash, which could have involved hundreds of people, and killed everyone in it.
